Official Rules and Information

We are looking for fresh lenses that can update our image of Coral Gables to what the city is today.

The 2019 Coral Gables Museum Photo Contest starts receiving applications on August 1st, 2019. Entries must be submitted by January 19, 2020. By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules. This is a skill-based contest.


By entering this Contest, all entrants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless Coral Gables Museum and its sponsors, partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.

Coral Gables Museum assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to Contest entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. CGM is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrants' or any other persons' computers related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any materials related to in this Contest. By entering, entrants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the Judges are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the Contest; (c) that the submission fee is of $25.00, to go towards professional printing and framing of selected photographs to the specifications of the Museum; (d) that Museum may use the winning photographs and/or each winner's name, photograph, likeness, and/or voice in any publicity or advertisements relating to the Contest or future promotions without compensation or approval. In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible or cannot be contacted, as required by the "Contest Prizes" Rules above, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and Museum, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another entrant.

The Museum reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant's identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Museum to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.


The Coral Gables Museum has the right to cancel or suspend the Contest and or exhibition at any time.

How to Enter

  • Location (which MUST be within the City of Coral Gables)

  • Date photograph was taken

  • Statement or Inspiration for this piece (no longer than 250 words)

  • One image of the work (it must be no bigger than 1200 pixels in either side and in JPEG or JPG format).

  • An entry fee of $25 for each submission. (Maximum three submissions allowed.)

Please be sure to read the RULES AND REGULATIONS before submitting your entries.


  • Entries may be submitted between August 1st, 2019 and January 19th, 2020.

  • Photographs must fit into one of the 2020 contest categories, as follows: Portraiture, Street Photography, Nature/Landscape, Night Photography and Digital Photo Manipulation.

  • Photographs must be taken within the City of Coral Gables. They should be no older than two years old and shouldn’t have been exhibited or won an award within the City of Coral Gables.

  • Images of the photographs must be submitted in digital format – no print or slide submissions will be accepted.

  • Submitted images must be in JPEG or JPG format, and no bigger than 1200 pixels in either side.

  • Submitted images must be labeled as: last name_first name_CONTEST CATEGORY.
    (For instance: Smith_Annie_PORTRAITURE)

  • There is a limit of 3 entries per person.


Applicants will be notified both via email and by phone within 1-2 weeks. For this purpose, Museum staff will use the contact information provided by the applicants in the entry form. 

Finalists will be asked to send a full-resolution copy of the selected photograph (smaller side - 16”; larger side - 20”, 300 DPI), in order for it to be professionally printed and framed.

*It is highly recommended that you prepare your image beforehand so that, if selected, you have enough time to deliver it to the Museum.


Prize winners will be announced at the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony on February 7th, 2020 – 7–9pm.


Jury Process & Prizes


All entrants invited to participate in the exhibition are considered finalists. All finalists who participate in the exhibit will be eligible to win the Grand Prize, People’s Choice Award, or any of the Category Prizes.

There will be a total of seven winners, as follows:

The Coral Gables Museum is excited to announce the jurors for the 2020 Capture Coral Gables photography competition. Jurors selected represent the broad spectrum of the photographic world. They will review all the photographic entries, determine which photographers will be invited to participate in the Museum’s exhibit, and select the awards in the five categories and the Grand Prize.

2020 Photography Contest Categories

Portraiture – Known as Faces of Coral Gables, the works in this category shed light on the ordinary and the extraordinary people of our city.

Street Photography – In this category, the City and specifically the streets of Coral Gables, are protagonist.

Nature/Landscape – Being home to beautiful nature-centered spaces such as Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, The Coral Gables Waterway, or The Merrick House, and crossed by beautiful tree-lined boulevards, our city lends itself for this category of outdoor photography, based on nature.

Night Photography - Explore the city nightlife and night culture in this category.

Digital Photo Manipulation – Artists are welcome to use the different digital tools available (Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.) to intervene/enhance their photographs or to create hybrid pieces that are photography-based.

One prize will be awarded in each category. There will also be a People’s Choice Award and the Grand Prize (Jurors’ Pick.)
